The Michigan Resource Center for Health & Safety offers a wide range of driver improvement programs, all taught by well-qualified,
experienced instructors who are certified by the National Safety Council
(NSC).
These programs are offered in a classroom format.
Why
bother? Traffic crashes can be extremely expensive for any business or
government agency. The loss of valuable employees, even for a brief period
of time is expensive and stressful. One recent study showed that the
average fleet owner can expect that about 20% of his or her fleet will
become involved in a traffic crash in any 12 month period; the cost will
average more than $9,000 per incident! Thus, formalized driver training
programs can be an extremely cost-effective way to reduce losses due to
traffic crashes. For example, one course for 25 drivers typically costs
less than $1,000, far less than the average cost of just one minor
collision.
Defensive
Driving Clients
For a number of years, the Michigan Resource Center for
Health & Safety has
provided defensive driving/fleet safety programs principally to two
audiences:
- Drivers employed in private industry or
government
- Drivers referred to a defensive driving
course by a court
Our predominant course offering today is
the basic 4-hour National Safety Council Defensive Driving Course or
DDC-4. We also offer a number of specialized programs that are designed
for specific groups of drivers:
- Van Drivers
- Utility Truck Drivers
- Ambulance Drivers
- Fire Vehicles
- Transporting Passengers with Special
Needs
- Law Enforcement
Plus, we offer the "Alive at 25" course for young
drivers.
The MRCHS has, over the years, qualified a
number of DDC instructors who are certified by the National Safety Council
after completing a two-day training program. Instructors are required to
have a background in traffic safety, driver education or law enforcement.
Some of our past clients have included
the U.S. Forest Service, the State of Michigan (various departments),
Huntsman
Polyurethanes, Mead Paper Company, Consumer's Energy, Detroit Edison and
various other employers. We also currently provide the DDC-4 Course for
the district courts in St. Joseph and Cass Counties where two classes
are offered each month with an average class size of 20 students.
